We had a great whale excursion. The boat is small and it was very easy to see everything. They have a boat designed to have the side windows open so you can easily take pictures from all sides of the boat.
The captain and his assistant did a great job of finding whales and holding the boat in positions that allowed us to take great shots. Both of them are local and know the places to go and how to ensure they do not impede on the wild life.
Definitely the company to choose.
A funny sort of review because we didn’t actually do the tour, but I’ll explain….
Because of weather and a shortened time frame with our cruise ship we arrived at Icy Strait Point and Colleen and our group mutually agreed that we didn’t really have any option but to cancel our planned tour.
Colleen was just marvelous. Spent about an hour with us, showed us around the impressive display at Icy Strait, took some of us into Hoonah and showed them around, and refunded our full payment within two days.
I would not hesitate to book with Icy Strait Whale Adventures again with that sort of service. Amazing, and we were very appreciative. Thank you so much!
This excursion was hands down the best of the best! Everything about these folks can best be characterized as class. Each and every aspect of this experience was enhanced by their caring and professional way of doing business. The boat was immaculate and the crew catered to every detail. We saw in the neighborhood of three hours around fifty whales. Thanks for a very memorable experience.
Can’t say enough about how professional, how great customer service is, how great the boat is, and the amount of whales we saw!!!! There were so many whales we couldn’t take enough pictures!! The boat is very comfortable, has great viewing on the front, back and sides. The picture windows on the side open for great views and pictures. They have a bathroom, soda, water, coffee, tea, hot chocolate and chips. It’s a smaller tour so you are crowded, plenty of room to walk around. This tour well with the money !!! Don’t miss it!!!
We spent one day in this beautiful fisherman’s pier, port of call of a cruise ship. We’ve ordered the excursion on internet and that was the best solution to save money and have the great opportunity to meet and see the whales.
After a 20 minutes trip among the sea we reaced the first of three point of observation that was so close to the whales to let us take the best photos and videos ever! great experience to follow the bubble that comes from the deep sea before see the magnificent scene of more than three -four whales surfacing and jumping ot of the calm sea . we ‘ve been taken in also four different places to continue being surprising for the constant emersion of whales . So grateful to Capt. Duane and his son that let us take best pictures of so many whales. Great experience.
After doing some research on our own…we decided to book Icy Strait Whale Adventures ourselves rather than booking an excursion through our cruise line. Great decision! Captain Duane’s deck assistant Tyler picked us up a little early. Since our party of 12 were all accounted for…we boarded the boat early. Five minutes into our trip, a large humpback was spotted bubble feeding in the harbor. We got several minutes of pictures. It was incredible! The seas were rolling that day with approximately 5-6 foot waves. It seemed the rough waters brought out all the wildlife. We saw a pod of Orcas, a brown bear on the shore and many humpbacks. Captain Duane was very skilled at getting the boat as close as possible for the best pictures. On our way back in…an eagle was perched on a pole watching us return. I highly recommend this excursion. It was incredible!
We had the most delightful day with Icy Strait Whale adventures. They were waiting for us when we arrived on land and quickly we were on our boat for the adventure. The boat was great and well equipped with BR and snacks. The captain and first mate knew EXACTLY where to go to be ahead of the others and see the whales. Lovely day on the water and we were not disappointed. Saw orcas, humpbacks, bears, eagles, otters, and such. I cannot recommend them highly enough. I would go again.
Great whale watching trip! Humpbacks and Orcas, but the crew was so informative about the area and the way of life in that part of Alaska. Don’t be afraid to ask questions – especially about their heritage. Very accommodating! Free snacks and sodas!
Booked this for myself and three friends, and all were very pleased. Pickup was as they told us it would be, and short ride to boat. Very good size, not crowded. Captain Duane said we were hunting for Orcas first, and we found them – pod of about 8. Only bad part was another boat that kept going too close to the whales, and making them leave. Finally left to search for humpbacks, which didn’t take very long. Talked with son Tyler about their life and how they lived. Was a wonderful day!
We had a wonderful whale watch trip with Captain Duane and his nephew, Tyler. The boat was exceptional – clean and a very comfortable ride. Both Duane and Tyler were very knowledgeable about the whales and the history of Hoonah and the island where it is located. We saw orcas, humpbacks and a bear wandering along the shore on our way back to the harbor thanks to Tyler and his great eyesight! There were only 5 passengers on the whale watch with more than adequate space to move around, view and photograph all the wildlife and beautiful scenery. I can’t imagine why there weren’t more people from the cruise ship on this excursion – they missed out on a trip of a lifetime!
